Duel Tones (Visuals by Maura McDonnell)

Duel Tones will make its premier at the Seeing Sound Symposium 2016 held in Bath Spa University, UK. 'Seeing Sound is an informal practice-led symposium exploring multimedia work which foregrounds the relationship between sound and image. It explores areas such as visual music, abstract cinema, experimental animation, audiovisual performance and installation practice through paper sessions, screenings, performances and installations.' - SeeingSound   Programme Note: Duel Tones is a work that explores through a visual music collaborative effort, the emergence of synthetic tones and timbres and synthetic forms and motion elements from a ground of blackness and noise.  The visuals were created first and the electroacoustic music composition was composed using the visuals as its structure and a type of synthetic graphic score.    Music composed by Bebhinn McDonnell Visuals composed by Maura McDonnell - Website - Blog

Colour Dreams 2015 (Album)

The idea behind the album is based on colours and the emotions each colour can provoke. I wanted to associate songwriting with visual, using sound andcolour. Words that describe colour can create very vivid images and I wanted to play on this for the album. This was used as a base for the structure behind the composition of each song. Kaleidoscope, Watercolour, Blood Red, Acid Green, Monochrome, Holographic, Translucent. Before I composed or wrote any words for each song I described each colour and wrote down what each colour provoked for me and what type of style of music each song should be based on this. The emotions that each colour invokes will be used to structure the composition and production techniques. Methodology for writing and producing the album: Brainstorming what emotions, memories and words that a colour brings to my mind. Under some of the following headlines: Word (The Colour), Mood, Style, Purpose, Poem, Visuals.

A Seven Nation Cello Concerto Army (Remix)

I sampled my favourite Cello Concerto: Elgar - Cello Concerto in E Minor and I sampled Seven Nation Army.Seven Nation Army fitted the theme of the Concerto. A song written about military while Elgar wrote the cello concerto after the Great War. Elgar who was ‘appalled and disillusioned by the suffering caused by the war, he realized that life in Europe would never be the same after such destruction. His first reaction had been to withdraw from composition, and he wrote very little music during the war's first four years. Then, over a period of twelve months - from August of 1918 to the following August - Elgar poured his feelings into four works that rank among the finest he ever composed [the cello concerto being the fourth work). These two works fitted aesthetically for the remix as Seven Nation Army is a positive outlook on war with lyrics saying ‘a seven nation army won’t hold me back’ while the concerto’s vibe is meant to clash with this as a more hopeless and unhappy outlook on the war. I wanted to remix this in a style where I was exploring sound and exploring between sound and melodies. Creating a dark […]

Dimensions (Piano & Taped Electronics)

When I began writing this piece I had the idea of layering sound to support the piano solo music in order to create a sense of different time dimensions arising from the melody of the piano part and to explore the possibilities of rhythmic gestures between piano and electronics. A relationship is sought between the piano and electronics through temporal delays and rhythm. This short piece is made up of two main melodies played by the piano, while the electronics add different textures that are active underneath these melodies. Between these two main melodies the piano part then switches its function and acts as a rhythmic gesture to enhance the electronics.
