Score: Inner Surroundings

Inner-Surroundings-Score.pdf For S. A. T. B (soloists), Piano & Flute The harmony, a-tonality, and instrumentation of this piece is inspired by the mind and all of the different thoughts it can think simultaneously. This piece is situated in the mind, each voice and instrument represents different thoughts that are in conflict with each other, and therefore, all six parts never quite form into one melodic line, as the mind is torn between good and bad thoughts. Even when some voices may think the same thoughts, the same words may be sung on different beats of the bar, this is in order to create a surround sound effect, in order to represent the different dimensions of the mind.

Score: Dé Ja Vu: A Fairy Let Loose

De-Ja-Vu-A-Fairy-Let-Loose-Score.pdf For 2 Flutes, Clarinet in Bb, Bass Clarinet in Bb, Timpani, Xylophone, Marimba, Vibraphone, Celesta, Cello, Double Bass & Piano. This composition tries to capture the mystical journey of a fairy set loose from her fort. The fairy loses her way, but is being hunted (to be brought back to safety) by the rest of her pack of fairies. While the fairy is lost she experiences Déjà Vu on numerous occasions; places seem familiar, but she does not quite recognise them. I had the idea of capturing these familiar and not-so-familiar places in the music by having certain motifs return in slightly different ways. I tried to build up a sense of drama of this chase by having various places of musical tension with climaxes that do not quite resolve in conjunction with strong rhythmic pulses. When the pack of the other fairies begin to close in on the fairy, the music becomes more calm but with small tense outbursts when they do not quite catch the fairy. It is not until the end of the piece, when the fairy is found, that one single note is played on the flute to depict this resolution.

Score: Phasing Keys

Phasing-Keys-Score.pdf For Flute & Cello Inspired by stereo phasing, I wanted to write an a-tonal piece of music that phased between different harmonies. Sometimes sounding more consonant and sometimes more dissonant.

Score: Refraction

Refraction-Score.pdf For Flute, Clarinet in Bb, Bass Clarinet in Bb, and Violoncello ‘Light bends when it moves at an angle from one transparent substance, such as air, to another substance, such as water. This bending of light is called refraction.’ Like broken reflections in a river that are still recognisable, I was trying to express this with melody and harmony. Fragments and flutters of melody broken up with silences and rests.
